Barbatuques at Lincoln Center out of Doors Festival
Barbatuques will be performing on Thursday, August 12, at 7:30 pm, at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival, Damrosch Park Bandshell, between 62nd and 65th Streeets and Broadway, New York City. Barbatuques is an artistic and pedagogic nucleus that researches body percussion. The musical expression through the exploration of various sounds that may be produced by the human body is the central theme of this work that is being realized since 1995, initiated by the musician Fernando Barba. Both as a musical group in stages and recordings and also as a nucleus of teachers providing workshops in different areas, Barbatuques has been performing for many years in Brazil and abroad. The body percussion work of the group Barbatuques began with the musician Fernando Barba through his own interest in making sounds with his body, a habit that was internally baptized with the word barbatuques. The concert is co-sponsored by the Consulate General of Brazil in New York. Now through August 14
Art Exhibit - Rock Paper Scissors
Applied to this exhibition, the title ROCK PAPER SCISSORS* is a broad analogy for the full circle of shifting "power" elements within a work of art. In this interplay, with "rock" representing the physicality of art-object, "paper" representing power of communication, and "scissors" representing tools of process, all exist in symbiosis, but shift in weight relative to each work. This exhibition concentrates on paintings, collages, and hand pulled prints by 13 diverse and independent artists, loosely associated by a common project, and all displaying an essential common trait: the pursuit of excellence in their craft. Central to this association is the Red Hook studio of master printer Sheila Goloborotko. An accomplished and internationally recognized artist in her own right, she is universally lauded for her ability to draw out the talents of artists working with her. The process of producing an edition of prints requires thinking in reverse, and thinking in sequence. The artistry comes from accomplishing this mindful, logical approach, without sacrificing the spontaneity and vibrancy of the artwork. Also on view will be the "Goloborotko's Studio 20th Anniversary Edition" Print Portfolio. Each of the 40 portfolios published in the 20th Anniversary Edition, consists of 13 numbered and signed 20” x 16” original prints on Rives BFK 300 gsm paper, unbound and housed in an archival clamshell presentation box. There are 16 portfolios available for purchase. One portfolio is part of the permanent collection of Brazilian museum "Pinacoteca de São Paulo". For fledgling collectors and connoisseurs alike, the exhibition will also have a series of affordable original prints. An artists talk will be held Wednesday evening, July 21, 2010, starting at 6:30 pm. A panel discussion will be led by master printers Sheila Goloborotko and Agnes Murray on the subject of connoisseurship in printmaking and the history of creating the portfolio. Many of the other artists will speak about their experiences developing and producing a work for a collective project, and the relationship of the workshop to their independent studio practice. At TABLA RASA GALLERY, 224 48 Street (between 2nd & 3rd Avenues), Brooklyn, NY 11220. 718. 833-9100 http://www.tablarasagallery.com

Cleansing Expo 2010 - Bembé do Mercado Exhibition at Chashama Gallery
Cleasing Expo 2010 - Bembé do Mercado Exhibition. Photographer: Edgar de Souza. The traditional party ‘Bembé do Mercado’, which celebrates slavery abolishing and takes place annually in Santo Amaro, BA (Brazil), is Edgar de Souza’s Photo Exhibition Theme at Chashama Gallery in New York. It starts on August 30 through September 9, 2010, and the Gallery is located at 112 West, 44th Street, between 6th Ave and Broadway. This is a traditional ‘candomblé’ celebration that arose back in 1889. According to Souza, his images aim to show Brazil folks integration, mainly in the region of Bahia. He adds: “The African and Portuguese cultural diversity is more evident in this part of the Country”. The exhibition is produced by Silvana Magda and is sponsored by The Brazilians Newspaper, The Palmares Foundation and Chashama Gallery. In 2009, ‘Bembé do Mercado’ celebrated 121 years of slavery abolishing in Brazil. This event often happens among other cultural activities, mainly religious rites such as ‘candomblé’, and music presentations. This exhibition has also been in Paris and Angola. History and Tradition: May 13 1889, a year later from the act that gave freedom to slaves, the newly common citizens from Santo Amaro da Purificação wanted to celebrate the anniversary of this great milestone. Defying countless speech and any sort of human expression restrictions imposed to former slaves and their descendants, the black community decided to call upon the `Candomblés` and ‘play the drums’ for three days in a row to invoke the ‘Orixás’. The ‘Bembé’ is not only a celebration for captivity’s freedom, but also a party that entails historical characteristics in many aspects, such as political, social, religious and other signs and symbols interpretation that are everywhere in these types of manifestations. Candomblé: Afro-Brazilian religion ‘Orixás’: Afro-Brazilian’s Gods. At Chashama Gallery, 112 West, 44th Street (between 6th Ave and Broadway), New York City.
